If you were to list all the marketing opportunities available to your company, networking would rank fairly low on the list after yellow pages, radio, TV, newspaper advertising and others. This is because few service companies make the most of networking opportunities and turn contacts made at such events into paying customers. A Federal Bureau of Labor study indicated that 70% of all new business comes from some form of networking.

Networking isn’t merely attending events and collecting business cards. It’s the development and nurturing of mutually valuable relationships. It’s making business friends. Scott Ginsberg, author of “Make a Name for Yourself,” claims that the word networking is tired and old and cliché. “It makes people think you’re throwing around a bunch of cards trying to sell, sell, sell,” he says.
